It seems Rich Johnson has a new home at Silver Bullet Comics (whose site refuses to go no-frames and has a silly nav bar, but I won't hold that against them!).
Two comics-related weblogs recently found:
linkmachinego and
C-Log. No doubt they'll be pillaged for this blog on a regular basis, but that's the whole point really! Any others you know of (preferably ones that don't regurgitate Marvel and DC press releases), do pass on.
In a related note, I see the long-running and near mythical Rich's Ramblings appears to have ground to a halt. The world, it doth appear, moves on...
I know a load of you cool small press types are secret weird-ass-superhero fans at heart so I feel obliged to pass on theSeanbaby Super Friends Page, from the geniuses who brought you all the Hostess Twinkees ads from the 70's comics.
A month back I mentioned on this blog that I had had difficulty finding samples of Darryl Cunningham's work online to show you. I mooted setting up a directory of UK small press cartoonists on this site purely so samples would be there should anyone need to refer to them. The UK Small Press Cartoonists Directory is now online. While it's early days (only 16 creators represented) I will be building it over time and welcome your imput.
Unlike some of my web activities this is an achievable project that fills a real need so I don't expect it to slip into obscurity. Honest!
New design, implemented throughout the site except in the shop, which I may well be working on soon.
This should give you an inkling of the direction I want to take BugPowder, moving it more towards an online community and away from being "Pete's site". Current ideas include replacing this blog with a rolling message board (rather like slashdot) and developing more independent sub-sites (like Andy's link lists).
There hasn't been a James Kochalka link here for a long time so here's a good un. A three minute film ostensibly titled "Monkey vs Robot which starts with James shouting to someone in building and grinning at the camera. As for the rest, I'm waiting for the download. Two links: The page with the film embedded and the quicktime film on it's own.
From Press-Release-Staros at Top Shelf about Strangehaven, one of the selection of comics I sell...
Los Angeles production company DAVID LANCASTER PRODUCTIONS aka LANINCO
has optioned Gary Spencer Millidge's critically acclaimed and
award-winning comic book series STRANGEHAVEN for a potential TV series
and motion picture.
Writer and co-producer Barry R. Nolan has been working on a series
treatment and pilot script for a potential TV show based on the
property.
"These are very exciting times for me, but it's not going to change my
life just yet," said Strangehaven creator Millidge, "as I realize any TV
or movie will take some time to develop. But Barry and David Lancaster
have been working very hard on developing the concept for other media
and any successful translation to the screen could have tremendous
benefits for the comic book itself. ... I would get a kick out of seeing
characters that I had created on the screen, but I certainly have no
aspirations of becoming a Hollywood screenwriter or producer. I'd rather
leave that to the experts and simply utilize any financial benefits to
enable me to concentrate on developing my comics career."
Millidge is currently working on the long-awaited Strangehaven #13,
delayed in part by the development of the movie treatment, as well as a
badly damaged thumb caused by a freak soccer accident. "It's terrific to
be able to get back to the drawing board after an eventful few months,"
claimed Millidge, "and Strangehaven will soon be back -- and on a more
regular basis."
Whether it'll be any good is not really the point. What matters is that when Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's From Hell was optioned Moore bought a new house and Campbell was able to self publish the collected edition. Gary is now set up to do his comics with no interference, which can only be a good thing.
I've been researching discussion forums with an eye to setting up something along those lines on BugPowder and had a look at the Indy Comics Mini-comics message board. Would this kinda thing be of interest here? Not necessarily the format of the board but the content.
And other than that, it's got some interesting stuff on there. For example, Sean Bieri has a collection of his mini-comic classics out. I may well aquire a copy myself!
The ComicArts Foundation is a new "thing" set up by persons unknown that recently came to my attention. They have an online propectus which all seems well and good but no list of members or supporters, which is curious. Unless no-one has joined up yet, I suspect they are keeping their options open and not taking sides, as it were. Interestingly there are no comics on this site. Maybe this again is to keep the field clear, as putting Spiderman on would alienate the alternative crowd and vice versa. More information as it come to light!
