Sturgeon White Moss #1

First issues are a funny thing, and this is no exception. Reading this I find myself veering between being impressed and disappointment. Impressed that a new UK anthology (by persons unknown to me, but that doesn't mean anything) can pull together international talent such as Aleksander Zorgaf, Mike Diana and Jeffrey Lewis, but disappointment at the rest of the package which doesn't quite seem to justify the beautiful production values.

That said, it is a first issue, and first issues are always wanting for that little bit more. The second issue is out later this month and, judging by the content list alone, looks to be a natural improvement. Once the editors get on a roll this could easily be a Scenes From The Inside of our times.

At the end of the day, I don't want to be negative about this venture as it strikes me as something important, bringing a fresh perspective to the UK art-comics scene. There is good stuff in here but on the whole it's just not quite there. Maybe I just had too higher expectations.

Contributors: Aleksander Zograf, Alexander Tucker, DJ Troha, Jeffrey Lewis, Jo Ratcliffe, Jody Barton, Luke Caulfield, Mike Diana, Robert Montgomery, Sean Flynn
